Unveiling the Power of Short Circuits: Impacts on Structures and Substations

Image
Have you ever come across the concept of a short circuit in your everyday experiences? It's a phenomenon that can result in significant harm to your electrical devices. However, have you ever considered the possibility that a short circuit can generate a force capable of damaging structures? It's quite fascinating, isn't it? When I first learned about it, I was quite surprised. This force is known as a short circuit load, and it holds great significance in power generation structures. Allow me to delve into further detail about this force. Short Circuit      A short circuit refers to a situation in an electrical circuit where a direct connection, or short circuit, occurs between the supply voltage or power source and the load or device being powered. In a short circuit, the resistance in the circuit becomes very low, resulting in a significant increase in current flow.      When a short circuit occurs, the current bypasses the norm...

Floating Planter: an architectural illusion

Image
Introduction: My friend who is a landscape architect and aspiring structural engineer called one evening to inform me that his client wants to float a planter in the air. I was confused and wondered how it is possible. I thought, his client, who is a top executive in a private firm, doesn’t know the concept of gravitational force. A lot of thoughts started pouring into my mind, It was then my friend who convinced me, that this small task will be interesting and would need my support in executing it. We met after a couple of days and he explained to me in detail about the problem. Existing Planter Condition and Reinforcement Cage (Left) Problem: After a couple of days, I and my friend were discussing the on-site situation. There are two existing planters already on the ground, inside a small pool. Planters will be surrounded by water.  But one fine day, when both the planters (i.e. planter A and planter B) were already constructed, and the only pending work was final finishing. Th...

#Self_Development: Track My Money

Image
I have observed that from the past 5 years, i.e.,  from the year when I started earning, I used to wonder where I spend my money. I knew I cannot buy unnecessary things, but I would still end up buying useless things which would lead to a cash crunch at the end of the month. Usually last 10 days of the month I used to have no money at all, and I would spend money like a guy in poverty. But the first 20 days of the month I would spend like a king. I am from a responsible background, I know I should not spend on unnecessary things, but sometimes I would think it is okay to reward myself, like buying an extra ice cream, buying imported perfume, or buying a t-shirt even though I don’t need, just because I found it very good, this would lead to a cash crunch at the end of the month. Hence the majority of the time I used to think to save, but I would not able to save or end up saving very minimally, which in turn saved money that would end in one or the other m...

#My_Perspective: Structural Engineering beyond Buildings and Bridges

Image
This article basically focuses on the scope of structural engineering.  There is a common misconception among youngsters that structural engineering is limited to high-rise-building and bridges. Definitely designing buildings or bridges is not an easy task. Lots of knowledge is required like deciding the framing, the type of foundation, loading application, seismic analysis, etc... So I’m not denying that building or bridge design is an important sector. But my focus is that other domains of structural engineering are equally important in nation-building College syllabus: College syllabus is set in such a way that the main subjects are related to building design and bridge design. Hence students lack knowledge of the scope and they blindly follow building designs as dream departments. Definitely, basic design knowledge is required such as beam, girder, column, footing, and connection. but the syllabus should not focus only on building or bridge designs. It's the duty o...
